Deputy Building Inspector Liz Gerrity | 4/21/26
I am writing to respond to recent public statements made by the Town Supervisor concerning the Building Department. Several of these statements are inaccurate and are not supported by the Department’s records. Because these statements affect public understanding of the Building Department’s work, it is important to clearly present the facts.
The Town Supervisor has publicly stated that the Building Department has only “one full-time inspector” and has used that assertion to suggest a risk to public safety. That statement is inaccurate. The Building Department has four full-time New York State Code Enforcement Officers - all perform inspections. The Department is meeting its responsibilities, and inspections and related duties are being completed in a timely and appropriate manner. There is no factual basis in the Building Department records to support claims to the contrary.
The Town Supervisor has also stated that reporting requests were not satisfied. That is not accurate. The Building Department has consistently provided detailed reports to the Town Board documenting inspection activity and performance. But at the Supervisor’s request, the Department provided expanded reporting and additional data in a clear and accessible format....
For 27 years, I have served the Town of Greenburgh with a commitment to professionalism, accuracy, and transparency. During that time, I have not seen a department or its staff subjected to this level of sustained public criticism while similarly structured departments have not, which raises legitimate concerns regarding fairness, consistency, and equal treatment within Town government.
Notwithstanding these circumstances, the Building Department remains fully committed to serving the residents and businesses of Greenburgh. We will continue to enforce the Code fairly and consistently, safeguard public safety, and carry out our responsibilities with professionalism, integrity, and independence.
